SYMPATHY TOO COULD BE SO SELFISH !!!!!!!!!!!
". She was not even worried about buying a rose to me but she worried and panicked and cursed the policemen feeling sympathy for the vendors. Now I understood the reason for her empathy. "
Wild and tumultuous was the scene. Long long back at Salem Agraharam or chinna kadai veethi scenario was very enjoyable. I and my sister used to flock the place as haunted ghosts. Such was the thrilling and exhilaration that we experienced whenever we were in that street. It is more and more interesting to watch the vendors on cycle stands. Little little banyans, trousers handkerchiefs arrayed colorfully were attractions of all time. Fruits of all tastes arranged in different rows of multiple stepped stands were inviting to the eyes and tongue. In addition mushroom vendors keeping the packets in their hands calling out for buyers catches the eyes of all the passersby. One Diwali eve I and my sister-in-law were crossing the Sarathi hotel. My second brother was newly wedded. I was going with his wife to the marketplace just to enjoy the evening in her company. Our aim was to go to Raja Ganapathi Temple and on our way back home to taste adai and avial in Sarathi hotel. It was a colorful evening with all vendors calling out to the buyers with never tired tones of great enthusiasm. I as usual was watching the shops and vendors and pedestrians struggling to find their way to reach out to buy what they wanted. As I was born in a lower middle class family I never had the chances of entering the great and grand jewelry marts. whenever I bypassed the Kumbakonam jewelers I used to ogle and sigh . Never will I have the chance to enter the portals of those big jewellery shops I used to think. But for this pinch of anxiety I used to be happy to spend my evenings in that street. We finished our visit to Raja Ganapathi temple. I bought one Kanaiyaazhi book in the petty shop opposite to the temple. My sister-in-law was watching lingeringly at the flower vendor. I told her to buy flowers. Immediately she took one rose and jasmine and kept it in her hair. She never bothered to buy one for me and did not even ask me whether I needed one. I was feeling bad about the behavior of her. On our way back she started talking to me of the plights of street vendors. I was listening half minded as her behavior in the flower shop irritated me and persisted too. We by passed Salem Jewelry. At that time there was a big siren and the police jeep arrived. The vendors panicked and tried to hide their commodities in the places where they used to keep them tied at night. My sister-in-law started to fidget and panic too. I was wondering at her strange behavior and told her to calm down. But she does not listen to me. She started cursing the policemen who were trying their best to regulate the traffic as it was a festive occasion. But she kept on cursing and shouting aloud " kadankaranga, pavinga nasama poga......" I was all the more annoyed at her behavior. All my attempts to hush her down failed. I goaded her to walk fast. We went to Sarathi Hotel and had adai and avial as planned. It did not taste well. My mood was spoiled beyond redemption because of her selfish behavior in the flower shop. I urged her to eat fast and instead of walking back home I pushed her into an auto and reached home. At that time we were living in Gugai area. Soon after reaching home i entered my room to change my dress. At that time I heard voices outside. My mother was welcoming someone. My anni also was very happily talking to that visitor. After changing my dress and washing my face I cam out. To my wonder and surprise I saw a big bundle of clothes consisting of little little banians, trouser, handkerchiefs..... etc., My sister-in-law went to Erode to purchase these goods and on his way back home at Dharmapuri he has come to see his sister. I heard my sister-in-law narrating to her brother about what happened in the market place. Again I heard her cursing the police men on duty. Now I understood the reason for her outburst.
. She was not even worried about buying a rose to me but she worried and panicked and cursed feeling for the vendors. Now I understood the reason for her empathy. Her brother also is a street vendor of bani ans ,trousers, handkerchiefs, bras, nighties......... I wondered
